Nam Ou Homestay

Experience the traditional way of life in a riverside village on the Nam Ou River between Luang Prabang and Nong Khiaw in northern Laos. Travelling in the direction from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang the experience starts at the village of Pak Nga where you meet Kham and take a boat trip on the Nam Ou to the village of Ban Muang Soune which will be your home for the next two days. Upon arrival you will be greeted by the family and made to feel welcome in your private room in their beautiful wooden house. Kham will explain the interesting history of the house, and there will be time to wander through the gardens or go for a swim if you like. In the late afternoon head out to explore the village where you will meet locals and pick-up some fresh ingredients at the small market. Back at the homestay you are welcome to help prepare dinner and learn about local cuisine. Enjoy a lovingly made meal for dinner with the family before turning in early as the locals do.  The following morning early risers can join Kham for an almsgiving ceremony at the local temple. After breakfast with the family head out on the Nam Ou River with Kham and her uncle to learn some fishing techniques, and hike through the rice fields to see organic gardens of the rural farmers. You will then bid farewell to Kham’s family and travel south by road to Luang Prabang, via the Pak Ou Caves. To create a more active experience you can finish by kayaking down the Nam Ou and Mekong to Luang Prabang.
