Homestay in the Sepik
A homestay in the Sepik region is a unique experience. It is undoubtedly 'rough and ready', as your accommodation will be very basic indeed, but the setting and the opportunity it affords, giving you access to one of the remotest parts of the country, will provide an everlasting memory.
Our Sepik River tours will take you by motorised canoe to the village of Kanganamun in Middle Sepik - the most interesting cultural area, and home to the famous Yatmoul, often called "crocodile-men", who scar themselves to honour the Crocodile Spirit. It is also here that the art of the Sepik region is richest with locals erecting immense spirit houses - true cathedrals of the indigenous art. Arriving in Kanganamun Village early afternoon your hosts will show you to your simple accommodation and afterwards you will have a day or two to explore the village and the local area, getting to know a part of the world that few visitors make the effort to reach.
It should be noted that a homestay in the Sepik is not for everyone, due to the local conditions, and if you do take the plunge you should travel with a sense of humour and a willingness to adapt to situations that may arise. But that said, anyone willing to rough it for a few days will make new friends and discover a part of PNG that is both wonderfully exciting and scenically stunning.
