Kayaking on Lake Tonle Sap

From your hotel in Siem Reap you will be transferred by road to the small floating village of Maichrey in a quiet corner of Lake Tonle Sap where lifestyles have changed little in generations. The village is located a little further away from town than the more popular floating villages on the lake so it receives fewer visitors. The hour’s drive takes you through picturesque countryside of sugar palms and paddy fields, before boarding a long tail boat for the last part of the journey to Maichrey floating village. Upon arrival at the village, you will switch transport modes to a kayak and there will be time to paddle between floating houses and explore the village at your own pace. When the lake’s water levels are high after the rainy season (October to January) the pagoda becomes an island and the floating houses are moored for the next few months. As the lake waters recede, houses are towed towards the open water so that the locals have access to the fishing they depend on. You will then head out on your kayaks towards the open lake, through semi-submerged trees that line the channel, watching the fishermen set their nets and looking out for the rich bird life that inhabit the area. After time to explore the lake return to your long tail boat for some refreshments, and then motor back to your hotel in Siem Reap.
