Sumo Wrestling

Sumo Wrestling is perhaps the most famous of Japanese sports.  This most traditional of sports has stood the test of time and is more popular now than at any time in history. There are 6 annual tournaments which each draw enormous crowds. The tournaments mostly take place in Tokyo and Osaka and we’ll be able to advise you if there is one going on during your visit to Japan and arrange tickets.

If there is not a tournament happening, then we can usually arrange a visit to one of Tokyo’s Sumo ‘Stables’ instead – this is where the wrestlers live, doing lots of training and lots of eating! For those who want to get fully immersed, we can even arrange for you to join some of the wresters for a ‘chanko nabe’ lunch (a hearty energy packed stew) where you can chat with them about their lives and careers as sumo wrestlers.
