Walking the Barkhor Circuit

The ancient streets circumnavigating Jokhang Temple in Lhasa’s Old Town is one of Tibet’s most famous pilgrim circuits, and an experience that will live long in the memory. Devout pilgrims travel thousands of miles from all over the Tibet to complete this sacred circuit, clutching prayer wheels and beads, to walk clockwise around the temple prostrating every few steps. Here you get a real sense of the pilgrims’ devotion, and how spiritual the Tibetan people remain in spite of modern developments.  The Barkhor area is lined with traders selling Tibetan arts and handicrafts, and a great place to shop for souvenirs whilst taking in the colourful stream of humanity.
