Preah Vihear Temple

Until recently the temple of Preah Vihear on Cambodia’s norther border with Thailand was on disputed territory, but now the situation has stabilised and now the majestic mountain top temple is open to visitors. Preah Vihear dates from the beginning of the 11th century and was considered so sacred that many of the Khmer Kings felt it necessary to leave their mark here. Occupying a truly breathtaking location on the top of the Dangrek Mountains at an altitude of 700m, Preah Vihear towers hundreds of metres above lowland Cambodia. The foundation stones of the temple stretch to the edge of the cliff as it plunges precipitously away to the plains of Preah Vihear province below, offering breath-taking views. A visit to Preah Vihear is possible as a long day trip from Siem Reap, or to experience the temple without the crowds we recommend an overnight stay at the nearby Preah Vihear Boutique Hotel.
