This is a more intimate setting than the Goroka Show and will enable you to get close to the villagers to learn about their traditions and see how they create their formidable costumes. Legend has it that that centuries ago the warriors of Asaro were defeated in battle and fled into the Asaro River where they became covered in grey mud. Emerging later, they ran into their enemies again who took them for ghosts and turned on their heels and ran. This unexpected victory by the Asaro has since been celebrated in song and dance and accounts for the villagers’ unusual costumes. As well as learning about this ritual, you will also discover how the villagers cultivate their gardens, grow cash crops and build their houses. A day that will prepare you well for the festival tomorrow where you will see the mud men in a much grander setting.

The ‘Goroka Show’ is a significant cultural event in the Highlands region of Papua New Guinea and is also the longest running annual cultural festival in Papua New Guinea drawing many tourists to the country every year in September during the weekend closest to the nation's Independence Day celebrations. More than 100 tribes participate in the event performing extraordinary displays of 'singsings' - traditional songs, dances and ritual performances. There will be some excellent photo opportunities so make sure your camera is fully charged and you have some spare batteries. Your guide will explain the order of events and will ensure that you witness the most important 'singsings' including those of the famous mudmen. At the end of the afternoon you will return to the hotel for dinner and relaxation.

Guided visit to the Goroka Show - Day 2: Today, you will have a further chance to enjoy the incredible spectacle that is the Goroka Show - probably the biggest tribal event in the Pacific area, and an incredible occasion to discover the tribal diversity of Papua New Guinea. These shows were first held in the 1950s and put on by Australian patrol officers, known as kiaps, as a means of bringing warring local tribes together to forget their differences. Since then the show has become more of an attraction for local, and international, tourists who come to witness the fabulous sight of thousands of painted warriors dancing, and singing, to the beat of Kundu drums. As with yesterday, today's activities will be fairly fluid and your guide will advise on the best order of events so as to ensure you get to see the best of the show. When you have had enough, you can return to the hotel for some time at leisure.

Important notes about the Sepik River Adventure:
* This is a true adventure and will take you to a wonderful, and remote, part of PNG. However conditions are basic and you should therefore travel with a sense of humour and a willingness to adapt to situations that may arise.
* Due to a lack of clean water around the Sepik River, the only solution is to wash in the river itself or with water drawn from the river. However although the river it clean it is contains a high level of silt. As a result it is useful to bring a lot of disposable wipes, and a towel, to clean yourself during the adventure.
* Transport is undertaken in motorised canoes made of traditional wood, equipped with cushions, but the comfort level is modest.
* Your homestay will be very basic. However you will be provided with a mattress to sleep on, clean bedding and a mosquito net.
