A classic combination of some of Papua New Guinea's most fascinating destinations. Start in the highlands where you will see some glorious scenery, meet the Huli Wigmen and the Asaro Mudmen, and hopefully get to see some birds of paradise. From the mountainous heartland of the country move on to the island of New Britain where you will witness the Baining Fire Dance, one of the most impressive dance performances in PNG, and see active volcanoes and some historic sites from World War II. From Rabaul fly, via the capital, to Tufi where you can explore local culture and snorkel on some fabulous reefs.

Private transfer: Upon arrival at Singapore Airport, you will be welcome to Singapore by your driver/guide and then transferred to your hotel in a private chauffeur driven car.

Day at leisure: You have most of the day to relax at your hotel. A late check out has been booked so that you can use your room until you check out.
Private transfer: At the appropriate time today, you will be collected from your hotel by your driver / guide, and transferred to Singapore Airport in time to check in for your flight to Papua New Guinea.

Hotel transfer to Ambua Lodge: On arrival at Tari Airport, you will be met by staff from Ambua Lodge and transferred by vehicle to the lodge itself which sits high on the slopes of the Tari Valley, with magnificent views across the surrounding peaks.
Afternoon excursion in the surrounds of Ambua: This afternoon, staff from the lodge will take you on an excursion to meet the colourful, and proud, Huli people who live in the valley below. Exploring the area near the lodge your guide will lead you along forest paths, past roaring waterfalls and over traditional bridges after which you will begin to develop an appreciation of the close relationship between nature and the Huli people.

Full day tour around the Huli Heartland: The Ambua area is home to numerous orchid species as well as an incredible 13 species of birds of paradise. Today you will be offered an opportunity to do some pre-breakfast birding. Later enjoy a day of cultural and ecological touring. You will travel by vehicle into the Tari Valley where you will visit the compounds, and sacred places, of the Huli Wigmen. Learn how the Huli live and how they interact with and use their environment. These tribesmen are world famous for the highly decorative wigs that they produce, from their own hair, and wear in elaborate initiation rites. Tari and the surrounding region are changing significantly at the moment and the Huli culture, although still very much alive, is greatly threatened by local mining projects. Today will give you an insight into a rapidly changing world.

Hotel transfer to Rondon Ridge: Upon arrival at Mount Hagen’s Kagamuga Airport, you will be met by hotel staff and then driven up a picturesque road past highland gardens and on to Rondon Ridge. Perched high above Mount Hagen, with mist filled views of the Wahgi Valley below, Rondon Ridge is your accommodation for the next two nights.
Afternoon guided visit to see the Asaro Mud Men: After lunch, you will have a chance to meet the famous Asaro Mud Men in a village close to Mount Hagen. This will enable you to get close to the villagers to learn about their traditions and see how they create their formidable costumes. Legend has it that that centuries ago the warriors of Asaro were defeated in battle and fled into the Asaro River where they became covered in grey mud. Emerging later, they ran into their enemies again who took them for ghosts and turned on their heels and ran. This unexpected victory by the Asaro has since been celebrated in song and dance and accounts for the villagers’ unusual costumes. As well as learning about this ritual you will also discover how the villagers cultivate their gardens, grow cash crops and build their houses. A fascinating afternoon before you return to the lodge to relax.

Morning guided bird watching: This morning you will have a chance to discover some of the local birdlife. Over 180 species of birds have been recorded in the rainforests around Rondon Ridge including ten species of Bird of Paradise. The surrounding area is pristine rainforest and home to numerous orchid species. The lodge has hours of walking trails providing ample opportunity to explore the unique ecology of this area. All nature and birding walks are accompanied by experienced and knowledgeable nature guides. After the excursion you will return to the lodge.
Cultural touring programme: Later today you will enjoy a cultural tour laid on by staff from Rondon Ridge. The programme will take you on a journey through the traditions and customs of the Melpa People. First contact with the Melpa was made in the mid-1930s when the Leahy brothers were prospecting for gold. The Melpa are said by anthropologists, to be 'predisposed to capitalism' because of their complex traditional society in which 'big men' earn status by accruing wealth and then giving it all away in a ceremonial exchange called "Moka". The tour today will also give you some insight into the fabulously interesting and complex society of the Wahgi Valley.

Guided tour of Kokopo & Baining Fire Dance: After lunch you will set out to explore Kokopo, the new capital city of New Britain and which is famous for a number of World War 2 sites and relics. After the sightseeing you will drive up into the mountains to reach the Baining area in the early evening. Here, in the village of Gaulim, you will witness the incredible sight of the Baining Fire Dance – during which masked "spirit men" dance in and out of the fire. This is one of the most impressive dance performances Papua New Guinea can offer.

Guided tour of Rabaul & Volcano: Today you will visit Rabaul, the historic capital of the region. Rabaul was in its heyday the most beautiful, and most vibrant, city in the Pacific - before being buried under the ash of Tavurvur Volcano during an eruption in 1994. It remains today a lunar landscape, with some still occupied buildings, such as the hotel where you will have lunch. Afterwards you will take a boat around Bay of Rabaul ending up in a magnificent setting at the base of the Tavurvur Volcano. Here you can learn about the strange megapod egg which is buried at the feet of the volcano. Later you will stop off at the volcano observatory which overlooks the Bay of Rabaul, for a panoramic view of the Peninsula of Gazelle and the crater of Tavurvur. Today’s activities of course depend on the benevolence of the volcano! Late afternoon return to your hotel for some time at leisure.

Guided tour of Port Moresby: On arrival back in Port Moresby, you will be met by your guide who will take you for breakfast and then on a tour around Port Moresby Nature Park - PNG's leading botanical and native zoological park which showcases the best of the nation's flora and fauna in a safe and picturesque setting. Over 150 animals are on display including multiple species of tree kangaroo, cassowaries, birds of paradise, parrots, pigeons, reptiles and wallabies. The Nature Park also features Port Moresby's only 'rainforest', currently home to a family of fruit bats, as well as a host of native plant species such as orchids. After a chance to explore the park you will return to the airport in time to check in for your flight to Tufi.

Snorkelling excursion at Tufi Resort: Today, you will have a chance to sample the snorkelling in Papua New Guinea. The fjords at Tufi, and the magnificent reef systems, are perfect for relaxed exploration. With visibility up to 30m most of the year, snorkelling off Tufi is an exciting experience. Dive into the crystal clear waters straight off the Tufi Resort jetty and you can snorkel all the way into the fjords and explore what this area has to offer. The fjords at Tufi are excellent for macro diving with species such as gobies, sea horses, nudibranch, shrimps and clams. With very little current in the fjords, many sponges and coral species grow prolifically and there are some very large sponges and shelf corals that are not common on the outer reefs. If you are feeling adventurous, then a trip to Cyclone Reef is an ideal way to spend the day in crystal clear waters. Cyclone Reef has a small coral cay that is surrounded by a pristine atoll. The resort's snorkelling boat ties up to a permanent buoy where you will be given an expert, guided tour of this magnificent reef, viewing hundreds of different species of colourful fish, beautiful coral and majestic drop-offs.

Cultural experience from Tufi Resort: This morning, you will take a boat from the resort and head out into one of the nearby fjords where you will be greeted by people from one of the local tribes. You will learn about their culture – one of the group will show you how to make sago in the time-honoured fashion before explaining how the tribe live off the land. You will also learn about the tradition of female tattooing and how they make canoes, string bags, fish nets and their fantastic feathered head dresses. A real chance to experience how the local people live which will be rounded off with a short sing-sing. Afterwards return to the resort for lunch.

Guided tour of Port Moresby: This morning, you will have a chance to see a little more of Port Moresby if you wish. Visits can be made to the National Museum and the Parliament building. Alternatively you may be happy enough just to relax at the hotel this morning - this can be discussed with your guide the night before. Either way at the appropriate time you will be transferred to the airport in time to check in for the flight back to Singapore.
