The Best of South India (21 days)
India’s southern states are a heady mix indeed. Here one finds India’s colour and chaos on a more microscopic scale: a medley of cultures and languages, landscapes varying between dry plains, lush backwaters, rolling hills and idyllic coastline, plus history and folklore galore. There is a huge range of experience on this 21-day itinerary: begin in Karnataka to explore the palaces of Mysore, and the wildlife of Nagarhole National Park. Next will be a journey through the Western Ghats weaving between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Enjoy the lush surrounds of Coonoor, Ooty and Pollachi before leaving the hills for the colonial heritage of Kochi and an overnight backwater cruise. Head back over the Western Ghats to Madurai’s vast Meenaskhi temple via stops at Munnar and the Palani Hills. Round out the trip with a two-night stay in Mahabalipuram to relax on the beach or at the pool. Mysore has a long history of eminent dynasties; over time, they have shaped a city that, even today, is one of the finest and best planned cities in Southern India. Often called the city of palaces, Mysore combines modernity and hustle with traditional grandeur. You will begin with to visit the historical fort of Srirangapatnam, just a 30-minute drive from central Mysore. Srirangapatnam, synonymous with Tipu Sultan - the so-called Tiger of Mysore, ruler between 1782 and 1799 - has been the scene of great political change in the Sultanate of Mysore. This island fortress was the summer capital of Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, and it was here where the latter met his end at the hands of the British. Much of the battle site is still intact, including the ramparts, the Water Gate, an area where British prisoners-of-war were held, and the site of the destroyed palace. You will also have the opportunity to explore Tipu’s summer palace, his mausoleum, and the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, all picturesquely located along the banks of the river Cauvery. After your tour you will return to Mysore to explore the sights of the city.
On arrival back in Mysore, you will continue to the city's principal sights: the magnificent Mysore Palace. The former residence of the Wodeyar Maharajas, the Palace is a splendid and expansive example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Highlight attractions here include are a magnificent gold throne, which is displayed during the Dussehra festival celebrations, a carved silver door, and the Kalyana Mandapa (Marriage Hall) and its depictions of royal rule. Continue to the local markets - always charming and good fun! - where you will see fruits and vegetable vendors selling their wares, and local artisans practising their craft. Your guide will take you to visit a sandalwood incense maker and will also uncover a favourite spot to try some of Mysore's famous sweets. Finish the guided tour with a trip up Chamundi Hill, which overlooks the city. At the top of the hill you will find the 2000-year-old temple of Chamundeshwari, from where one can enjoy fantastic panoramic views.
Evening cooking demonstration: This evening, an interactive ‘Kodava cuisine’ cookery lesson with your hostess will be arranged. One aspect that stands out about Kodava/Coorg cuisine is the heavy use of spices, coconut, jackfruit, and other fruits. With extensive use of spices and coconut, the food comes out to be spicy yet delicious. Chutneys and pickles are also play an important role in Kodava food and largely use ingredients such as coconut, onions, and garlic.

The little museum at the palace has a collection of costumes, palanquins and other articles from the royalty. Adjacent to the palace is the Jewish Synagogue, built in 1568. This simple building has marvellously rich interiors with clusters of coloured glass lamps hanging from the ceiling, and a floor of blue willow-patterned tiles, none of which are identical. From here move on to St. Francis Church, which was built in 1503 at Fort Cochin, making it one of the oldest churches in the subcontinent. It was built by the Portuguese, but became a Protestant church with the arrival of the Dutch and an Anglican church after the British occupation. Day at leisure - car & driver at disposal: Today, you have a whole day to explore Munnar and the surrounding region in the company of your driver-guide. Munnar's elevation of 1600m makes it very conducive to the cultivation of tea, cardamom and coffee, so you may like to start the day by enjoying the lush greenery of the tea gardens which spread for miles and miles in and around the picturesque hills. A visit to a local plantation is recommended, where one can watch the tea pickers at work, returning from the fields with oversized bags of fresh leaves strapped to their backs. Walking in coffee and cardamom fields is also enjoyable – these crops grow under shade, so naturally these estates are peppered with huge tropical rain forest trees. For the nature lovers it is a delight to walk through these cool estates listening to birds, squirrels and occasional monkeys.
Heading further afield, we also recommend a visit to Eravikulam National Park (the park remains closed in February and March for the calving season) which was established to protect the Nilgiri Tahr (Nilgiri Ibex). This is the natural habitat of the Tahr: half the world's population of this rare mountain goat, which is fast becoming extinct, is found here. If you are lucky you can observe the Tahr from close quarters. A stop can also be made at the Tea Museum (closed on Mondays) where you will get to taste some of the local tea. The museum houses curios, photographs and machinery, all of which have a story to tell on the origins and growth of tea plantations in Munnar.
Your driver-guide is on hand all day today, and the itinerary is very flexible. The above are just a few suggestions on what to do, but please let us know if you have more specific plans.

Later in the evening, you will be taken to visit the mesmeric Sri Meenakshi Temple. The temple complex is within a high-walled enclosure, at the core of which are two sanctums, in turn surrounded by a number of smaller shrines and grand pillared halls. Especially impressive are the 12 gopurams - soaring pyramid towers which rise from solid granite bases, wildly decorated with stucco figures of deities, mythical animals and monsters painted in vivid colours. You will arrive in time for the evening ‘putting to bed’ ceremony, a dazzling affair of noise and colour which is not to be missed. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva’s consort Parvati, known here as Meenakshi.
