With 781 species of birds, 190 species of mammals, hundreds more species of reptiles, and literally thousands of insect species, it is fair to say that Papua New Guinea has a serious wealth of indigenous wildlife. However much of this biodiversity is found in remote areas and is often difficult to find without expert assistance. This two week tour takes you to some of the best areas to view wildife in PNG, and you will stay in the best lodges and be looked after by excellent local guides, all of which will provide an excellent chance of seeing a very diverse range of birds, animals and reptiles - and the odd local too!

Connect in Singapore: On arrival in Singapore, you will collect your luggage and check in for the onward flight to Papua New Guinea.
Flight: PX393 Singapore - Port Moresby 20.15 - 04.50 (overnight)
Meet & greet service at Port Moresby: On arrival at Port Moresby Airport, you will be met by our local representatives who will assist you in getting to the domestic terminal where you can check in for your onward flight.

Hotel transfer to Rondon Ridge: Upon arrival at Mount Hagen's Kagamuga Airport, you will be met by hotel staff and then driven up a picturesque road past highland gardens and on to Rondon Ridge. Perched high above Mount Hagen, with mist filled views of the Wahgi Valley below, Rondon Ridge is your accommodation for the next two nights.
Afternoon at leisure: This afternoon, you can relax after the long journey or undertake an excursion with staff from the lodge to see local birdlife.

Morning guided bird watching: This morning, you will have a chance to discover some of the local birdlife. Over 180 species of birds have been recorded in the rainforests around Rondon Ridge including ten species of birds of paradise. The surrounding area is pristine rainforest and home to numerous orchid species. The lodge has hours of walking trails providing ample opportunity to explore the unique ecology of this area. All nature and birding walks are accompanied by experienced and knowledgeable nature guides. After the excursion you will return to the lodge.
Afternoon cultural tour: This afternon, enjoy a cultural tour laid on by staff from Rondon Ridge. The programme will take you on a journey through the traditions and customs of the Melpa People. First contact with the Melpa was made in the mid-1930s when the Leahy brothers were prospecting for gold. The Melpa are said by anthropologists, to be 'predisposed to capitalism' because of their complex traditional society in which 'big men' earn status by accruing wealth and then giving it all away in a ceremonial exchange called "Moka". The tour today will also give you some insight into the fabulously interesting and complex society of the Wahgi Valley.

Charter flight: Depart Mount Hagen Airport on the Trans Nuigini Charter flight to Lake Murray.The flight departs at 09.00 and arrives at 10.00.
Hotel transfer to Lake Murray Lodge: Upon arrival, you will be transferred by hotel staff to Lake Murray Lodge which has a special position overlooking the lake. Built in a style that is sympathetic to its surroundings the lodge still manages to provide modern comforts despite its remote location. On arrival you will check in and then have lunch.
Afternoon excursion from the lodge: This afternoon, join lodge staff on a excursion to see some of the indigenous wildlife that lives in the surronding area.

Wildlife excursion from the lodge: Today, join lodge staff on an excursion by 8-seat boat to see birdlife and fishing spots around Lake Murray. Western province is home to over 50% of Papua New Guinea's total bird population and Lake Murray is one of the best bird watching areas in the province. In addition to a host of migratory birds you can hope to see birds of paradise, pelicans, hornbills, eagles and parrots as you move around the lake. Lake Murray is also known for its fish and black bass, barramundi and saratoga may all be found in its waters.

Wildlife excursion from the lodge: Today, you will set out again with lodge staff on another excursion by boat to see more of Lake Murray's wildlife and also to explore some of the island communities of stilted houses that are dotted around the lake. In these villages dugout canoes are the primary mode of transportation and fishing is a major source of food to the local population of about 5,000 people. As with yesterday, there will be plenty of time to try and see the indigenous wildlife.

Hotel transfer to the airport: At the appropriate time today, staff from the lodge will transfer you to the nearby airstrip in time to board the Trans Nuigini charter flight on to your next destination.
Charter flight: Depart Lake Murray on Trans Nuigini Charter flight to Tari. The flight departs at 10.30 and arrives at 11.30.
Hotel transfer to Ambua Lodge: On arrival at Tari Airport, you will be met by staff from Ambua Lodge and transferred by vehicle to the lodge itself which sits high on the slopes of the Tari Valley, with magnificent views across the surrounding peaks.
Afternoon excursion in the surrounds of Ambua: This afternoon, staff from the lodge will take you on an excursion to meet the colourful, and proud, Huli people who live in the valley below. Exploring the area near the lodge your guide will lead you along forest paths, past roaring waterfalls and over traditional bridges after which you will begin to develop an appreciation of the close relationship between nature and the Huli people.

Morning guided bird watching tour: The Ambua area is home to numerous orchid species as well as an incredible 13 species of birds of paradise. Today, you will be offered an opportunity to do some pre-breakfast birding with the aim of getting to see some of the amazing birds of paradise and other birdlife in the region.
Afternoon visit to the Huli Heartland: This afternoon, enjoy a cultural and ecological tour. You will travel by vehicle into the Tari Valley where you will visit the compounds, and sacred places, of the Huli Wigmen. Learn how the Huli live and how they interact with and use their environment. These tribesmen are world famous for the highly decorative wigs that they produce, from their own hair, and wear in elaborate initiation rites. Tari and the surrounding region are changing significantly at the moment and the Huli culture, although still very much alive, is greatly threatened by local mining projects. Today will give you an insight into a rapidly changing world.

Hotel transfer to Karawari Lodge: Upon arrival, you will be transferred by hotel staff to Karawari Lodge. Sitting on a ridge above the Karawari River, Karawari Lodge boasts a spectacular view over hundreds of kilometres of dense tropical jungle. Inspired by local architecture and built with traditional materials, the lodge still manages to provide modern comforts. On arrival you will check in and then have lunch.
Afternoon visit to Kundiman Village: This afternoon, join lodge staff on a visit to Kundiman Village where you will watch a sago making demonstration. There are no roads, no shops and no phones in this part of the country. The locals live completely off the land, weaving baskets for catching fish, gathering, preparing and cooking their staple food from the Sago Palm. Sago is the staple food of the local river people and this afternoon you will get a sense of its importance to village life.

Full day excursion on the Karawari River: Today, the lodge will arrange a river excursion, in their 18-seat motorized jet boat, to some of the surrounding villages where you visit traditional homes and get a glimpse of a very different lifestyle. Cruise along the jungle-fringed waterways of the Karawari River, where boatmen, standing upright, paddle their slender dugout canoes with sculpted silhouettes of crocodile masks. Your insight into village life will include seeing carved totems, drums, woodcarvings and different expressions of local art. Along the way you will also see the bountiful birdlife that inhabits the rivers and nearby lakes. This excursion is designed to enhance your understanding of traditional village culture in the Sepik region and to see some of its wildlife.

Private transfer: Upon arrival in Port Moresby, you will be met by your local guide and taken to the Airways Hotel for an overnight stay.

Guided tour of Port Moresby Nature Park: This morning, you will have an optional tour of Port Moresby Nature Park - PNG's leading botanical and native zoological park which showcases the best of the nation's flora and fauna in a safe and picturesque setting. Over 150 animals are on display including multiple species of tree kangaroo, cassowaries, birds of paradise, parrots, pigeons, reptiles and wallabies. The Nature Park also features Port Moresby's only 'rainforest', currently home to a family of fruit bats, as well as a host of native plant species such as orchids. Afterwards, you can have an early lunch (payable locally) before transferring to the airport in time to check in for your flight to Singapore.
