Arrive in Taipei and spend 3 nights at the Mandarin Oriental, exploring in and around Taiwan's entertaining capital before heading by train down the east coast to Taitung county. Here you will stay in a world class hot springs resort, the Royal Chihpen Hotel, for a couple of days and have an opportunity to do some cycling in the scenic East Rift Valley if you choose. Next stop is the famous Taroko National Park with its breathtakingly beautiful gorges, stay in the heart of the park itself at super stylish Silks Place. A drive from Taroko along one of the world's most picturesque roads, the cross-island highway, brings you to the mysterious Sun Moon Lake and the luxurious haven of the Lalu. Continue south for 2 nights in the city of Tainan, awash with cultural delights and home to the Shangri-La Far Eastern Plaza Hotel. Your final stop will be the city of Kaohsiung with its important harbour and delicious seafood. Stay in the Ambassador hotel here with a room overlooking the river and head out with your guide on a day trip to Cijin Island.

Meet & Greet: On arrival in Taipei, you will be welcomed to Taiwan by your private driver-guide and transferred to your hotel in the city.

Full day tour of Taipei: After breakfast, you will be met at the hotel by your guide who will take you on a sightseeing tour of Taipei's main attractions. Start the tour with a visit to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, an imposing hall which is dedicated to the former president with a museum on the ground floor dedicated to Chiang's life and achievements. From there continue to visit the impressive Taipei 101 tower, which until 2010 was the tallest building in the world. You will be taken up to the observatory on the 89th floor to take in the fantastic view of the city. This afternoon visit the Martyrs' shrine, dedicated to those who have lost their lives fighting for Taiwan. Watch the changing of the guards here before visiting the National Palace Museum, which has one of the world's largest collections of Chinese art.
Depending on the time your sightseeing takes, you may have be able to return to your hotel in the afternoon to relax for a while before heading out with your guide in the evening to visit Shilin Night Market, this is Taipei's most famous night market and the perfect place to experience some delicious local street food dishes (payable locally).

Morning tour of Yangmingshan National Park: A short car journey north of Taipei is the Yangmingshan National Park which has flora and fauna galore. Your guide this morning will show you around some of the parks highlights, including some interesting geysers and active volcanic craters, if you so wish, there will also be an opportunity to do some walking. At lunch time, continue to the Marshall Zen Garden Restaurant at Beitou, where you will enjoy a delicious lunch and, if you wish, a private hot spring bath (supplement payable locally).
Afternoon at leisure: Return to your hotel in the afternoon for some time at leisure.

Private transfer: This morning, you will be met at your hotel by a driver and transferred to the railway station for your train journey to Taitung.
Train: Puyuma Express Train 412 will depart from Taipei Main Station at 08.50 and arrive in Taitung at 12.56.
Private transfer: On arrival in Taitung, your guide will take you on a brief tour of the nearby Peinan Cultural Park before transferring to your hotel in Chihpen to relax for the afternoon and enjoy the hot springs bath at the hotel.

Guided tour of the East Rift Valley: Today you will be taken on a tour of the East Rift Valley National Scenic Area. Here, verdant mountains and scenic farmland meet in a land that is hugely varied in its topography of gorges, waterfalls, hot springs and rivers. Today you have the option of exploring with your guide by car, on foot or hiring bikes and doing the scenic Yuli Bikeway (around 10km).

Road journey to the Taroko National Park: After breakfast, check out of your hotel and head north up the coastal highway 11 towards the Taroko National Park. There are countless opportunities to stop on this stunning drive, including the rock formations at Xiaoyeliu, Sanxiantai Island, Baxiandong Cave, the Tropic of Cancer marker and Shitiping. Depending on sightseeing today, you will arrive in your hotel in the Taroko National Park in the late afternoon. Dinner is included at your hotel.

Full day tour of the Taroko National Park: After breakfast, you will be taken on a tour of Taroko National Park, visiting the magnificent Gorge Gateway, the Eternal Spring Shrine and Buluowan, where you will discover the cultural heritage of the Aboriginal Taroko tribe. There are a big selection of trekking trails in the national park, some short and simple and some more challenging. You can discuss the options with your guide today should you wish to do some trekking.

Road journey to Sun Moon Lake: This morning, head west on the cross island highway, one of the most scenic roads in the world. The road winds its way through the mountainous centre of Taiwan and there are many places that you may wish to stop to take in the view. Depending on how many stops you've made, you may wish to stop in the town of Cingjing, about 3 hours from Taroko, for lunch (payable locally). Cingjing is an area famous for farming and is one of the few places in Taiwan you will find sheep. Continue on to Sun Moon Lake to check-into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Explore Sun Moon Lake: Today your guide will take you to see some of the interesting sights around this magical lake. These include the Wenwu Temple, the Tehua Village, the Hold Monk Shrine and the Tse -En Pagoda. You may like to rent bicycles and cycle around the lake or explore some of the beautiful surrounding hills on foot.

Road journey to Tainan: After breakfast, your guide will drive you to down through the mountains to the west coast of Taiwan and the famous old city of Tainan. Stop en-route for sightseeing in the town of Jiji to see the famous Wuchang Temple. The old temple partly collapsed during a large earthquake in 1999 but has been kept as an attraction whilst a new temple has been built next to it. Continue to Tainan and check into your hotel.

Guided tour of Tainan: Today you will be taken on a tour of Tainan. First you will be taken to visit the Chinese styled Chihkan Towers, built during the Qing dynasty on the site of the former 17th Century Dutch fortress, Proventia, nowadays known as Chihkan Towers. Next, visit Kung Miao, the oldest Confucius Temple in Taiwan and the first educational institution on the island. Built almost 400 years ago, the temple has been restored a number of times, but still maintains its traditional style of architecture. Conclude your city tour with a visit to the 17th Century Fort Anping, also known as Fort Zeelandia, the first Dutch fortress built on the island.

Road journey from Tainan to Fo Guang Shan Monastery: After breakfast, check out of your hotel and head about an hour south from Tainan to the famous Fo Guan Shan Monastery.
Guided tour of Fo Guan Shan: On arrival, you will be met by a member of the monastic community who will take you on a guided tour. Fo Guang Shan, literally meaning ‘the light of Buddha mountain', is a 52 acre temple complex outside the city of Kaohsiung. In the complex there are a number of large shrines surrounded by grand rows of pillars and pagodas of all sizes. The network of footpaths and bridges taking you around the complex make it a good place for a tranquil wander around and an overnight stay at the Pilgrim's Lodge allows visitors to spend time in one of the complex's meditation centres, a most peaceful and enlightening experience. At the entrance to the complex there is a 36 metre high statue of Amitabha Buddha standing over 480 smaller Buddha statues, a spectacle that will remain in your memory.
Road journey from Fo Guan Shan to Kaohsiung: After your tour of the monastery, continue on to the nearby city of Kaohsiung, stopping for sightseeing at the Lotus Pond in the north of the city before continuing to your hotel in the city centre to check in and relax for the evening.

Guided tour of Cijin Island: This morning, your guide will take you on a day trip to Cijin Island. The Island is a 10 minute ferry ride from the city and is a great place to explore on foot or by bicycle (which can be rented on arrival on the Island). Famous sights on the island include the Matsu Temple, and an old lighthouse. There is also a sandy beach which is good for swimming and you can enjoy lunch in one of the many restaurants on ‘seafood street'. Return to the city in the afternoon for some time at leisure.
