Ladakh: Between Heaven and Earth (13 days)
Widely referred to as ‘Little Tibet’, Ladakh is a world apart from anywhere else in India. Accessible only by flight (from Delhi), and only for a short few months of the year, this is a standalone destination which cannot easily be paired with anywhere else in the Subcontinent. But what a destination: glacial, lunar landscapes, fascinating untouched culture, and incredible adventure activities on offer at every turn. Unlike much of the Subcontinent, Ladakh is best visited in our summer months, and as such is an extremely enticing option for an adventurous family holiday. It is also ideal for return visitors, Himalaya junkies, and/or those with a yen to visit truly off-the-beaten-path corners of the world. The below itinerary showcases a general interest tour taking in Leh, Nimmu, Nubra Valley, and Stok; this could be easily adapted to suit a variety of interests and age groups. Accommodation is in good quality character properties, roughly of a 3-4* range, but for those seeking the very best in comfort we strongly recommend basing an itinerary around the two outstanding TUTC luxury camps in Thiksey and Diskit.

Guided tour of Likir, Rizong, Alchi Monasteries: Today, you will be taken on a day long excursion to see some of the most stunning monasteries of the entire Indus Valley region: Likir, Rizong and Alchi. First up is Likir, around 60km (or just over an hour’s drive) from Leh. Likir translates as ‘Naga Encircled’, so named as the Gompa is said to stand surrounded by the bodies of two great serpent spirits: the Naga-rajas, Nanda and Taksako. Lhachen Gyalpo, the fifth King of Ladakh, offered the site to Lama Duwang Chosje; the Lama, a great champion of meditation, blessed the site and after which construction of the monastery begun.
A further 30 minutes in the car will bring to Rizong Gompa. Rizong is a Gelugpa monastery, built in the late 19th century, tucked into a steep hillside. Next door is the Thardot Choeling Nunnery, where you can learn more about the lives of the small group of resident nuns.
Come off the hillside and down to Alchi Gompa, situated on the banks of the Indus. Built in the 11th century, Alchi is one of Ladakh’s oldest standing monasteries and houses some fantastic interior frescoes. Although no longer an active monastery, the Gompa is looked after by monks from Likir Monastery and is an extremely interesting visit.

The palace museum houses an intriguing collection of Buddhist art, weapons, jewellery and artefacts, including some outstanding thangka painting.
