Explore Indonesia’s fascinating heritage and culture on this classic tour of a trilogy of diverse and contrasting islands. Fly to Central Java and spend your first two nights in the scenic valleys surrounding Borobudur, and explore small temples, local villages and the world-famous Buddhist monument at sunrise. Continue to the bustling city of Yogyakarta, often described as Indonesia's cultural capital, to visit the Hindu temples of Prambanan, the Sultan’s Palace and explore the backstreets which are well-known for their batik workshops. You will then take a flight to the major city of Makassar in southern Sulawesi, a frantic yet fascinating port where cultures and traders convene from the remote eastern half of the archipelago, and take a brief tour of the city’s markets and colonial relics. Head north to Sulawesi’s Central Highlands to discover the strong cultural identity of the Toraja people and their elaborate funeral ceremonies, and have time to explore the spectacular scenery of the region. You will then take a flight south to the spiritual island of Bali, and spend time in the village of Sidemen to walk in the rice terraces, and visit the island’s many cultural sights. The trip finishes with a relaxing 3-night stay at an attractive beach resort on Bali’s quiet east coast.

Road journey from Yogyakarta to Borobudur: Leaving the city behind, head north into Java's countryside on your road journey to Borobudur, a drive of approximately 2 hours.

Full day tour of Borobudur & Mendut: This morning, you have the option of an early start for a tour of Borobudur at sunrise (this early start is optional!). Indonesia's largest and most impressive Buddhist monument, Borobudur is a vast structure with 9 levels and an awe inspiring setting in the midst of a fertile valley ringed by volcanoes. The temple was built as a pilgrimage site to teach followers how to practice the Buddhist way of life. Each level of the monument has intricately carved sculptures and symbology from the teachings of Mahayana Buddhism. The top level of the temple is a particularly spiritual place dotted with stupas housing Buddhist sculptures, with magnificent view of the surrounding countryside. After Borobudur visit the smaller temple at Mendut and then proceed to the village of Candirejo for a horse & carriage or bike ride to explore the local farms and see village lifestyles. You will come across cottage industries producing sweet potato crackers, traditional herbal medicine and bamboo carvings, and also see the traditional krubosiswo dance and learn how to play Javanese Gamelan. Return to your hotel in the afternoon for some time to relax.

Road journey from Borobudur to Yogyakarta: Depart the Borobudur area for Yogyakarta, a road journey of approximately 2 hours.
Morning Yogyakarta city tour: This morning, you will be taken on a tour to explore the cultural highlights of Yogyakarta. Start with a visit to the “Sultan’s Palace” or Kraton. Parts of the Sultan's Palace, are open to visitors, including a number of open air buildings used for ceremonial purposes and museums with memorabilia showing the life and work of previous Sultans. The Water Castle and gardens of the Palace can also be visited, which is where the Sultans enjoyed their time with their many wives and concubines in a series of elaborate bathing pools. Continue with a tour of a traditional batik workshop to see the process involved in this traditional art form, and Kota Gede the original home of Yogya‘s silver industry where craftsmen have practiced for hundreds of years.
Afternoon tour of Prambanan: This afternoon, you will be taken on a tour of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Prambanan, Java’s largest Hindu Temple. The Sanjaya Dynasty built the 47m high temple dedicated to the three forms of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva in the 9th century and surrounded it with several smaller temples. The temples were first rediscovered by a British surveyor under the instruction of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1811.

Makassar city tour: Today, you will be taken on a short tour of Makassar City, with a visit to Port Rotterdam and the Lagaligo Museum, which has sections on ethnology and history. Continue to Paotere which is the old harbour of Makassar, where you can see the world famous “Phinisi” or Bugis schooners.
Dinner at Ratu Gurih: This evening, you will be taken to one of Makassar’s famous seafood restaurants for dinner. Choose from a wide selection of supremely fresh fish and watch it being grilled over a charcoal barbeque. The fish will be served with rice and a selection of tasty vegetable side dishes and sauces.

Road journey to Rantepao: Upon arrival at Palopo, you will be met by your guide and driver, and then transferred to Rantepao in the Toraja highlands. The driving time is approximately 2 hours, with an optional stop en route to stretch the legs and enjoy the spectacular views.

Full day tour of Toraja villages & countryside: Today you will be taken on a full day excursion in Toraja. Start with a visit to the village of Lemo to see rows of Tau-Tau and the hanging graves. Continue to Sangalla to visit royal graves of Sangalla kingdom at Suaya. After lunch in a local restaurant in Rantepao visit the traditional Torajan village of Kete-Kesu, famous for its woodcarving, to see the Tongkonan and the old rice-barns. The final stop of the day will be made at Londa which has an ancient natural grave where the deceased are entombed during extravagant ceremonies.

Full day tour of Toraja villages & countryside: After breakfast, set off for Bori to see megalithic stones and graves of babies. From here climb up Batutumonga Hill to enjoy spectacular views over Rantepao and the surrounding valleys. Continue to villages of Bori and Palawa and then enjoy lunch in a local restaurant. In the afternoon visit Marante to see hanging graves and statues.

Road journey from Rantepao to Sengkang: This morning, depart Toraja Land for the journey south to Sengkang, a journey of 210km taking approximately 3.5 hours. En route there will be the option to stop for a view of the Erotic Mountain in Enrekang, which is in an area known as the "rice bowl" of South-Sulawesi.
Afternoon tour of Sengkang: Having checked in to your hotel, head out on an afternoon tour of the Sengkang area. Start with a visit to a Buginese traditional silk-weaving workshop where women hand spin and weave silk clothes. Continue with an exploration of Lake Tempe on a motorized canoe to see the floating houses decorated with colourful flags and lifestyles of the fisherman and their families. The floating village is located in the centre of the lake and is inhabited by around 30 families that live in a traditional way. There may be the chance to visit one of the fisherman's homes and drink tea accompanied by a fried banana (Pisang Goreng) with the family. As you travel around by boat keep your eyes peeled for the rich bird life that is attracted to the lake's vegetation.

Road journey from Sengkang to Makassar: After breakfast this morning head back south towards Makassar, making a stop at the village of Rammang Rammang en route. Located approximately 50km from Makassar this protected area of karst mountains and limestone cliffs that is considered one of the most beautiful karticos landscapes in Sulawesi. Archaeologists have discovered prehistoric drawings in the caves that riddle these limestone outcrops, indicating that this region of Indonesia has long been inhabited. At the village of Rammang Rammang board a small motor boat for a short river cruise through the spellbinding scenery of green clad mountains. After your boat trip take a walk through the village to see locals going about their daily lives. You will take a walk inside its valleys and rice fields, surrounded by spectacular limestone peaks, caves, and rainforest. You will arrive back in Makassar late this afternoon in time for your flight to Bali.

Road journey from Sanur to Sidemen: Set off from your hotel in Sanur to Sidemen in eastern Bali, with sightseeing en route. Start with a visit to the holy spring of Tirta Empul surrounded by a large shrine to honour the God Indra. There are bathing pools which are believed to have strong curative powers. On the hill behind this temple is a presidential guest house built by the late President Soekarno. Then continue along terraced rice fields to Besakih temple, located on the slope of Mount Agung, Bali highest volcano. It is called Mother temple of Bali as it houses ancestral shrines for all Hindu Balinese and a complex of nearly 24 temples.
Afternoon walking tour: This afternoon, you will be taken on a 3 hour trek in the famous rice terraces around Sidemen. The trail will take you across paddy fields, over water irrigation channels, through bamboo forests and plantations of coffee and clove. This is a fascinating trek for those who want to explore the stunning rice terraces, see local agriculture and the daily life of local people.

Full day tour of Eastern Bali: After breakfast this morning, head to the east of the island for a visit to Kerta Gosa, or Hall of Justice, built in 18th century in Klungkung. It is beautifully laid out within a moat and provides an exquisite example of the Klungkung style of painting and architecture, especially in the ceiling murals. Continue to the fishing village of Kusamba, which is also a centre for salt production. Here you will see colourful local boats lined up along the black sand beaches. Continue along the coastal road to Nusa Penida, and on to Goa Lawah (Bat Cave). This cave, whose walls vibrate with thousands of bats, is considered holy, and there is a temple and several shrines protecting the entrance. After lunch there will be a visit to Taman Tirta Gangga (Water Palace) whose swimming pools and ornamental ponds serve as a fascinating reminder of the Balinese rajah's old days. Our last stop will be Tenganan, an original Balinese village, a stronghold of ancient traditions. You can see the local women weave the famous "flaming" cloth, kamben geringsing, which supposedly has the power of immunize the wearer against evil.
