Lake Murray is Papua New Guinea’s largest lake being some 39 miles long and 11 miles wide in its normal state. It is situated in the remote Western Province and is really only accessible by a short flight from Port Moresby. In the rainy season (December to Apr) the lake can grow to five times its normal size, providing a vast watery home to a variety of fish species, plenty of birdlife and numerous crocodiles. The lake is also home to a few indigenous tribes who live in stilted houses around the water’s edge or on tiny islands within the lake itself. Visitors to Lake Murray can enjoy this beautiful, and largely tranquil, setting from the comfortable Lake Murray Lodge that provides a great base for birders, fishermen and nature lovers alike.
