Tari is a town in the Southern Highlands that is home to the Huli Wigmen who are renowned for their colourful ceremonial costumes and accompanying wigs. Reached by plane from Port Moresby or by road / plane from Mount Hagen, Tari sits in a valley close to the Doma Peaks and offers an insight into a world that is still largely traditional but changing rapidly as the influence of mining projects nearby affects local communities.
Forests in the Tari region are home to 217 species of birds of which 13 are different birds of paradise. Visitors to Tari can also see numerous orchids and rhododendrons on well-kept nature trails that cover some glorious countryside.
