Almora & the Kumaon Hills
The gateway to the Kumaon Hills is Almora, a small highland town which clings to the hillside, with streets cascading from its highest point down into the steep valleys which surround. Away from its busy main transport hub, the town itself has some charm and is a good place to source local handicrafts. The main draw of visiting Almora however is moving away from the town to isolated lodges amongst rural low Himalayan countryside. From these bases one can explore the alluring and richly forested hills, taking walks through tiny highland hamlets, trekking up passes and ridges to enjoy sumptuous views of the Himalayas. Multi-day itineraries taking in 2 or 3 or more lodges can be arranged, linking each village house with pleasant walks of around 4-5 hours each day.
