The first notable town in the Fergana Valley on the road from Tashkent, Kokand acts as a gateway to the wider region. The town was once the capital of the Kokand khaganate in the 18th & 19th centuries, and at that time it was a hugely important religious centre in Central Asia. The streets of the Old Town house a number of madrasahs and mosques which can still be explored today.
