This once secluded fishing village about 40km north of Colombo has, in recent times, become one of Sri Lanka's most visited Beach Resorts. Being just a short drive from Bandaranaike International Airport and with a 3km long stretch of golden beach it is easy to see why Negombo receives visitors from all over the world, craving their quick fix of sun, sand and dreamy views out over the Indian Ocean. For an insight into what makes the Negombo locals tick, we recommend a morning visit to the nearby fish market and a walk around the Negombo Lagoon where you'll see hundreds of colourful wooden boats. At the end of the peninsula you'll also see the remains of an old Dutch Fort.
