Ahmedabad
The commercial hub of one of India’s most prosperous states, Ahmedabad is a vibrant, booming city, and first in India to be declared a UNESCO Heritage city. Although it is not the state capital of Gujarat – that honour belongs to Gandhinagar, 30km to the north – it is the biggest and the major transport hub. Nearly all visitors coming to Gujarat will therefore pass through Ahmedabad, and it is well worth stopping for a night or two while to explore. The historic old city has a number of beautiful mausoleums and mosques, and we also highly recommend a visit to Sabarmati Ashram - former home of Mahatma Gandhi, and headquarters during the movement for Independence. Known as the ‘Manchester of the East’, Ahmedabad has long been known for the quality its’ textiles, an industry which has been thriving here for centuries.
