After Kolkata, Guwahati (sometimes Gauhati) is the second-largest city in Northeast India, and one of the fastest-developing conurbations on the subcontinent. Primarily a commercial centre, tourist sights are limited to the attractive Khamakya Temple and pleasant riverfront views along the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra. Most travellers visiting the city will be using it is as a transport hub: it is the gateway to the northeast region with good road and rail links, plus a busy regional airport which brings in travellers from Delhi and Kolkata and then links across Assam, Sikkim, and even on to Bhutan.
