Mahabalipuram
Mahabalipuram is now a relatively small, dusty town, but once was the main trading port of the 7th century Pallava Empire. Time and tide has taken most historical construction here - it is thought there were once seven temples in all along the shorefront, but now just the one remains. Nonetheless it remains well-preserved with intricate stonework on display throughout, complemented by its alluring seafront situation. In recent years the town has also become something of a beach destination, with several international resorts accompanying a string of more basic guesthouses. The central town area is relatively developed with places to eat and shop, but still has a very pleasant laidback feel.
