Around an hour east of Agra one finds the peaceful and idyllic enclave of Chambal. The picturesque ravine is a world away from the bustle of modern Agra: it can be used as a rural base for visiting the Taj Mahal, but is also a very attractive destination in its own right. With close proximity to the Chambal River Sanctuary it is a particularly enjoyable visit for wildlife enthusiasts, especially birders. It is also located close to the ancient temple town of Bateshwar, a so-called ‘mini Varanasi’, home to some 40 Shiva temples dotted along the washing and bathing ghats of the Chambal River.
