Rishikesh is calm, clean, and serene: a fine antidote if you’re feeling done with the hustle and bustle of northern India. Ever since the Beatles came here in 1968 the town has been a beacon of spirituality for international travellers. Known as the ‘Yoga Capital of the World’, there are a huge number of ashrams in and around the town, with courses ranging from 1-day to several months. In addition to Yoga, Rishikesh is also excellent for white water rafting – the icy-blue Himalayan Ganges cuts through the town, at this stage in its journey clean and crystal clear – as well as for treks and hikes in the surrounding forests. Despite seeing a steady stream of travellers the town does not feel well-trodden and still has a very friendly, small-town atmosphere.
