Pushkar is a small, dusty town on the edge of the Thar desert. With a nominal population of about 20,000, it swells to ten times this amount during its famous camel fair, held annually in October or November. In addition to the camel fair, Pushkar is among the most scared of Hindu pilgrimage destinations: its central lake is surrounded by temples and bathing ghats, and regularly plays hosts to noisy and colourful puja ceremonies. On top of all this, the laidback location and spiritual atmosphere has turned Pushkar into something a backpacker hub – an intriguing mix of tie-dye and tantra! All-in-all this tiny town regularly plays hosts to over a million tourists in the course of year, and yet still manages to retain a peaceful, alluring air.
