Adventures in Sulawesi (20 days)
This adventurous tour showcases the culture and natural wonders of southern and central Sulawesi. The trip starts in Makassar, a frantic yet fascinating port where cultures and traders convene from the remote eastern half of the archipelago. Drive north from the capital through spectacular karst limestone scenery to the highlands and discover the strong cultural identity of the Toraja people, famous for their ancient funeral rituals and boat-shaped Tongkonan houses. Here you will take a trek to a remote Torajan village for an overnight stay in a traditional house, then raft through wilderness areas down the Maiting river. Continue your tour to the clear blue waters of Lake Poso in central Sulawesi, a tectonic lake that is one of the world’s deepest, and explore the local villages, waterfalls and surrounding hills. Your next adventure lies in nearby Bada Valley, a lush area of fertile land that is cut off from the coastal plains by rugged mountains cloaked in thick rainforest. Explore the pre-historic megaliths that dot the countryside and take a hike through the Lore Lindu National Park to see the astonishing variety of plant and bird life that thrive in this remote habitat. Your journey then continues overland to the port of Ampana, where you travel by ferry to the Togean Islands to end your tour in this incredible marine environment and have some time to relax at a laid-back resort complete with a house reef for snorkelling. Return to Makassar for your final night in Sulawesi and enjoy a farewell dinner at one of the city’s famous seafood restaurants.
