The remote city of Nukus may not have much to recommend itself on first glance, but there is plenty here to justify the journey. The Mizdakhan Necropolis is located just outside the city and has some beautifully preserved mausoleums and other religious structures, and the Savitsky Art Museum houses one of the finest collections of Soviet Art in the world. Nukus also serves as a gateway to the disappearing Aral Sea, which can be visited on an overnight tour from the city. The journey overland from Nukus to Khiva allows travellers to stop at the impressive ruins of the Khorezm Fortresses out in the desert.
