Generally used as a stop en route from Bukhara to Samarkand to the desert yurt camps near Lake Aydarkul, Nurata may not look like much at first. However, this small town was once home to Alexander the Great, and some fragments of his fortress can still be seen. At the base of the fortress is a holy spring, an interesting mosque, minaret, and a 6th century hammam, which is still in use today.
