Udon Thani
Udon Thani, once a strategic military base during the Vietnam War, is a bustling city in Thailand’s northeastern Isaan region. Isaan has its own unique culture, similar to that of neighbouring Laos, and is known for its stunning landscapes, remote Khmer temples, friendly people, and delicious cuisine. As of 2024, the area is now home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Near to Udon Thani is Ban Chiang, an archaeological site that houses fascinating artefacts from one of the world's oldest Bronze Age civilizations. Furthermore, the nearby Phu Phra Bat Historical Site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site list for 2024. This picturesque area has been recognised for its unique examples of the Sima stone tradition of the Dvaravati period, preserving the world’s largest collection of Sima stones. These are ancient boundary stones that are sacred in Theravada Buddhism.
Situated just over the Mekong River from the Lao capital Vientiane, visitors to the region are easily able to combine the two countries, linking up with Laos’ impressive new highspeed railway. Intrepid travellers can even continue by railway up to Kunming in China’s Yunnan province.
