Fort Hammenhiel

Fort Hammenhiel is a totally unique place to stay and is likely to be one of the highlights of your visit to the north of Sri Lanka. The restored Dutch fort and former prison is on its own little Island off the larger island of Karainagar and about 20 km outside the centre of Jaffna. It has just 4 tastefully renovated en-suite rooms, a small courtyard and peaceful gardens. Although there is evidence of the forts past as a correctional facility throughout, the friendly staff will make you feel very comfortable. Guests get to the fort from its own private jetty on the mainland, where the restaurant and hotel bar are also located.
