Once a small settlement tucked away in the highlands, Goroka is now the foremost town in the Eastern Central Highlands and has its own airport. However it still only has a population of around 20,000 many of who are farmers or coffee growers making use of the fertile soil in the surrounding mountains.
The town is most famous for the wildly colourful Goroka Show which has been hosting annual singsings for over 50 years and which draws in plenty of tourists each September. Labelled as one of PNG’s most charming towns a stay in Goroka gives you a good insight into highland life and a chance to see the Asaro Mudmen, who live nearby, as well as the famous Goroka Show.
