Nestled into the foothills of the Al Hajar Mountains around Jebel Shams and around 40km north of Nizwa, Al Hamra is one of Oman’s most venerable traditional towns. Houses in the old town are still largely made from red mudbricks, many dating back for hundreds of years and now looking somewhat crumbly! Much enjoyment can be taken from pottering around the dirt roads and the narrow, winding streets of Al Hamra’s old town and a visit to the Bait Al Safah Museum gives a valuable insight into old Oman.
