The small town of Nakhal, 90km southwest of Muscat, is home to one of Oman’s most picture-perfect forts and is well worth visiting if you are spending few days in Muscat or Al Mussanah. Although comprehensively restored in 1990, the fort dates back to pre-Islamic times and has impressive towers to explore with delightful views out over the Western Hajar Mountains.
