What passport and visa do I need to visit Laos?

Passports
It is a requirement of the Laotian Government that British visitors to Laos possess a valid 10 year passport and that the passport has at least six months validity from the date of your entry into Laos. You must also ensure that your passport has at least two blank pages. Please check that your passport complies with this well in advance of travel.

Visas
The Laotian Government requires British passport holders to have a visa for entry into Laos. Until 31 December 2024, a single entry visa will permit stays of up to 60 days. From 1 January 2025, tourist visas will permit a stay of 30 days. Multiple entry visas are only available from the Lao Embassy prior to travel. On arrival - For those arriving by air, visas are available upon arrival at Vientiane, Luang Prabang & Pakse international airports. Visas are also issued at a number of international overland checkpoints, please check here.

The process is usually straightforward and relatively quick, although it can take longer if several planes have landed more or less simultaneously. You will need US$50 in cash and two recent passport photos for a single entry visa. Please also ensure you have two blank pages in your passport for visa purposes.

Apply online
If you wish to purchase your visa in advance, you can apply for an e-visa online at least five days prior to your arrival in Laos. The fee is US$50 for a single entry visa and you will need a recent passport photo to upload. Please note that e-visa is only accepted at major entry points. To apply and for more information please visit the official visa website
