Okinawa (Main Island)

The largest and most populated island in the archeplago is known simply as ‘Okinawa’ or the ‘Main Island’ and it is over 100km in length from north to south.

The island has a rich history, dating back many centuries and the north is dotted with remnants of the former Ryukyu Kingdom, who ruled here from the 15th century until 1879. As you head south, there is more modern history to explore including several WWII battle sites. Indeed, the Americans still maintain large military bases on the island.

The prefecture’s capital, Naha, is by far the largest city in Okinawa and boasts a fun and vibrant shopping area and an enviable seaside location in the southwest of the main island. Chatan in the central part of the island is another good place to stay, with the large Mihama American village which has shops, restaurants, and entertainment it provides a real cultural mix of a fun-filled seaside holiday suitable for all ages.

The best way to explore Okinawa main island is to drive yourself in a hired car, the roads are mostly quiet, and it is easy to find your way around.

Popular activites on Okinawa Main Island include day trips to nearby islands such as Zamami Island, swimming off some delightful white sand beaches, heading off on snorkelling or diving trips and indulging in the fantastic local food.
