Okayama is a big city and capital of the Okayama Prefecture in the Western Honshu region of Japan, sitting half-way between Osaka and Hiroshima. The city is home to one of Japan's 'big three' gardens – Korakuen, which were establishedby the local feudal Lord way back in 1686. The large garden has many different sections and features a variety of rock formations, lakes and open areas, as well as cherry and plum trees and even a small tea plantation. Next to the gardens is Okayama Castle, a pretty construction of the original which is also well worth a visit and from where you can enjoy great views out over the gardens. As well as its own delights, Okayama, is a great place to be based for a few days as it is within easy striking distance of Kurashiki, with its atmospheric ancient district and Naoshima Art Island.
