Like Goa, Diu has a very strong European vibe - the island was a Portuguese colony for over 400 years. The island is best known for the atmospheric old town with its colorful streets and numerous crumbling Portuguese villas and churches. The island is also blessed with white sand beaches which are popular with local visitors enjoying picnics or beach games. While Diu is connected to the state of Gujarat by bridge, it forms part of a separate state union territory known as Daman and Diu, which means the island does not fall under the laws enforced within Gujarat, such as the prohibition of alcohol.
