Shillong was the former capital of colonial and post-Independence Assam, until it became the capital of the newly created Meghalaya State in 1972. The former hill station’s position amongst rolling hills led the colonial British to dub it the "Scotland of the East”. The city has experienced some sprawl, but certain pockets retain an old-time charm. The main highlight is the surrounding area, which is a mixture of rolling scenery, clear lakes, and numerous waterfalls. The traditional seat for the local Khasi culture, the Khasi follow a matrilineal system in a largely patriarchal Indian society and are builders of Meghalaya’s famed living bridges, is also just a short drive away.
