Mon district is the northernmost district of Nagaland and surrounded by the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to its north and west, with Myanmar to the east. Home to the Konyak Nagas, the largest tribe among the Nagas, the humble hill town of Mon is the best access point to the many villages in the area. The Konyaks are famous for their tattooed faces and bodies and were famed for their strong warrior traditions, including the practice of headhunting, which continued until the 1960s. As Mon is one of India’s remotest regions and considered something of a last frontier, accommodation is often provided in very rustic guest houses or basic homestays which are shared with local families.
