Bijapur makes a strong claim to be the ‘Agra of South India’ for its array of 15th to 17th century Muslim architecture. The jewel in Bijapur’s crown is the Golgumbaz, a world-famous mausoleum, topped by a vast hemispheric dome housing the tomb of Mohammed Adil Shah (1627-56), 7th ruler of the Adil Shahi dynasty.
