Maheshwar
Once the capital of India’s celebrated female ruler Ahilya Bai Holkar the Holkar Queen of the Maratha Malwa kingdom. The queen moved her capital to Maheshwar and ordered the construction of the Ahilya Fort in the 18th century. The fort has now been converted into a heritage hotel and offers one of the most dramatic and unique settings of any hotel. Enclosed within its massive walls, the fort’s cliff edge location offers staggering views over the sacred Narmada River and the bathing ghats immediately below. Within the fort there are gardens, pretty courtyards and verandahs, hidden terraces and turrets where guests can wander and get away from it all.
