After Kuching, Miri is the second largest city in Sarawak with a population approaching half a million people. As well as its importance for Borneo’s petroleum and palm oil industries, Miri is the main tourist gateway to the Mulu National Park and the Kelabit Highlands, both a short flight away. It is also an easy drive into the Kingdom of Brunei, to the archaeological remains in the Niah Caves and to the refreshing Lambir waterfall. Whilst it is primarily a stopover destination, offering comfortable accommodation, a stroll around Miri offers a good insight into modern day life in Borneo.
