Sandwiched between the forested slopes of the Taebaek Mountains and the sea, Gangneung offers a refreshing blend of coastal scenery with modern city living.  The city is linked by high-speed train with Seoul and other principal cities, and acts as the gateway to the mountainous Gangwon Province.

The city is home to the beautifully preserved Ojukheon House, once home to the esteemed Confucian scholar Yulgok Yi I, and is one of the oldest buildings within South Korea. While the city has plenty of history, it is best known for its association with modern Korean culture. Several sites within the city have featured in Korean dramas, but the city went international when the hit band BTS used Jumunjin beach as the cover for their album You Never Walk Alone. The BTS Bus Stop is now one of the most visited sites within Gangneung.
