Set in the north-west of Vietnam, Sapa and the surrounding area play host to a number of Vietnam’s hill tribes. The mountainous countryside here is spectacular and provides a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Hanoi, with plenty of opportunities for trekking and local village visits.. Founded by the French in 1922, Sapa was a hill station that fell into neglect as the French left and the area became embroiled in conflict.
These days the area is open for tourism and many people come here to sample the trekking opportunities and at the same time discover a world which has changed little over the centuries.
