Siquijor is a small island located in the Central Visayas, famed for its reputation as an island of mystery and intrigue. The Spanish called the island 'Isla del Fuego' - Island of Fire, after the masses of fireflies that can be spotted on occasion around the island. The island is believed to have risen from the sea during a tremendous thunderstorm, and some locals point to the mysterious shells and fossils found in the mountainous interior as evidence of this. Siquijor folk also tell tales of the island's relationship with magic and witchcraft, with some tribal medicine purveyors still resident deep in the forests. For the less imaginative, Siquijor remains a typically Filipino idyll, ringed by perfect beaches and home to a number of prime dive spots.
