Laoag is a small but busy city, capital of the north-western province of Ilocos Norte. Few foreign tourists make it up to this part of Luzon, but there is a steady trade in domestic tourism. Many Filipinos make the long journey up here to visit nearby Sarrat, the birthplace of former president Ferdinand Marcos. Currimao, a couple of hours north of Vigan, is home to the interesting converted-colonial-village-cum-hotel Sitio Remedios, where you will be staying. A short drive from here is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Paoay Church - built in 1710 and boasting a mixture of European, Latin, and Javanese architectural styles. Finally, a hop further on from here is the provincial capital of Laoag; the last major settlement before you reach the north-western tip of Luzon, and home to region's airport.
