The small island of Koh Samet sits off the Thai coast just a few hours drive, and a ferry (or speedboat) ride, from Bangkok. This picturesque island has been designated a national park which has restricted the level of development allowed here. As a result Koh Samet retains a charm that many other islands have since lost due to the onset of mass tourism. Here you will find white, sandy beaches and clear blue seas, and whilst some of the roads are definitely bumpy there is an old world tranquillity that is alluring.
Due to its proximity to Bangkok, Koh Samet can get busy on Thai holidays and some weekends as young urbanities seek to escape from the big city in search of fresh air and a chance to relax by the sea.
