Jiufen and the neighbouring village of Jinguashi were once the centre of the Taiwan’s gold mining industry and are now relics of a former time. Jinguashi has an interesting mining museum whilst the atmospheric old town of Jiufen is famous for its old tea houses and for escaping the modernisation that has taken hold in other parts of the island. Visitors should be aware that Jiufen in particular can get quite crowded with visitors during the day, which is why we often recommend spending a night there to enjoy the more peaceful evening time and to explore the charming lantern-lit streets without having to fight through the crowds.
