Adam’s Peak, or Sri Pada, is Sri Lanka’s most famous mountain and a sacred place for local Buddhists. It is a tall conical mountain in the west of Sri Lanka’s hill country, around an hour by road from Hatton and close to the Maussakelle Reservoir. Climbing the mountain is popular with local pilgrims and there are six trails which climbers can take. Climbing to the summit of Adam’s Peak will usually take 4-5 hours and most will set off in the middle of the night to reach the summit in time to enjoy the sunrise. Close to the summit climbers come across the ‘Sri Pada’ (‘sacred footprint’), a rock formation that in Buddhist tradition is believed to be the footprint of Buddha.
