This part of the east coast suffered terribly due to the long years of civil war and from the 2004 Tsunami, but is now experiencing a significant resurgence, with new resorts popping up along its long stretch of golden beach. Whilst the new development is changing this area quite quickly, the beach remains one of Sri Lanka's best and it is a usually dry from May until October when the west coast can be affected by ‘Yala' Monsoon. Snorkelling and fishing excursions can be arranged by most resorts and bicycles can be rented to explore the local area. The village of Kalkudah, with its own idyllic beach, just a couple of kilometres south is worth exploring.
