Birkat Al Mauz
Just 25km east of Nizwa, Birkat Al Mauz, (literally meaning ‘Pool of Bananas’, which are still grown here), is the gateway to Jebel Akhdar and the Saiq Plateau. It is also home to the Falaj Al Khatmeen, a UNESCO World Heritage site and historically, one of the most important water channels in Oman. Whilst it has been largely modernised, the town of Birkat still has a higgledy-piggledy mudbrick old town to explore and the Bait Al Ridayadha Fort.
